Hey there Cambridge!
Recently in my AICE Media class, we were given a project where each pair of students were provided a word, more specifically, a feeling. With that word, each pair was tasked with creating a 60-90 second film representing that feeling through the use of camera shots/angles, editing techniques, but no sound elements. My partner and I were given the word, curious.
First, we had to brainstorm our story. It was honestly kind of difficult to figure out a scenario representing curiosity, but we landed on the idea to illustrate students passing a note around class, while a clueless, perplexed character tries to figure out what the note reads. Our brainstorming sheet allowed us to make a plan for possible shots and editing techniques to use in our film.
My partner and I then drew a storyboard together. This helped us visualize more of how the film will look all together as we drew our 15 shots. In addition to helping us pre-visualize our film, it also helped us plan what and how exactly we need to film and how the shot should look.
Ultimately, the brainstorming sheet and storyboard were so necessary to the planning of our film. My partner and I were able to figure out how the story will go and how to build the feeling of curiosity by seeing it on paper first.
To edit, we used Adobe Express, as we had quick and easy access to it.
Overall, this project helped me realize how important planning (with brainstorming sheets, storyboards) and editing is to the success of a film. Without both, creating this film would have been a mess in discovering what we should do while filming and what would work well on the spot... which of course would not have turned out well. Also, utilizing editing techniques such as eyeline match truly highlighted our character's curiosity by illustrating their interest in the note!!
For our first editing project, I feel as though our film went well. We came up with a good idea, good plan, ready for filming. We used multiple techniques and shots purposefully to build a sense of curiosity. Yet, I think illustrating the feeling of curiosity through the characters facial expression could have been better, although it is pretty difficult to purposefully make a curious face... I tried my best lol.
