Beginning of Music Marketing Project!

Hey there Cambridge!

My media class and I have begun our music marketing era, where we are studying singers/bands' marketing and distribution practices. My group of five, will be researching the pop genre!

Pop music is described by EnglishClub.com as songs with "good rhythm, catchy melody, and are easy to remember and sing along to".

Each of us group members chose two pop singers under the same company. I chose Ariana Grande and Conan Gray, who are under the Republic Records label.

First, I researched a bit about Republic Records, including its history and major artists. I learned that it was founded by two brothers and is known today as the TOP 1 label in the industry! 👆🎧🎶

Ariana Grande is one of the most popular pop singers known today. She is also the third most followed female on Instagram. With this information, it is easy to conclude that her marketing strategy must be well done and distinguishable.
The coolest part about analyzing Ariana's marketing and distribution, was looking at how much it has developed from being a Nickelodeon star to a pop singer and Glinda in her new film, Wicked. As well as how her audience has further developed with the growth of her career.

Conan Gray, an emerging pop singer, has rose to fame in the last few years. This singer is a great example of how social media has been a big part in marketing, as he rose to fame because of TikTok. His song Heather became a trending song on the social media platform.

Despite being an internet personality, having a following on Instagram/TikTok, he is using non-tech methods of marketing. He sends select fans in a country he will be touring in a handwritten postcard listing the dates for his tour. This personalized message encourages the fan to spread news of his tour via word of mouth, making him a creative genius!

Analyzing one of the most influential pop singers and a new/emerging one provided me with the opportunity to further compare the marketing and distribution techniques of both artists. The major difference I noticed was that, even though their audience is quite similar, Conan Gray uses some non-tech marketing techniques and audience appeals, like giving handwritten postcards and roses to fans, while Ariana Grande keeps a normal social media and singer-audience relationship. This makes me wonder, does technology-based marketing have the same effect as creative non-tech-based marketing? My answer to that would be no! Examples from Conan Gray's marketing seems to make his fans feel special, while Ariana Grande's just social media presence in marketing seems to not do the same. However, which one best attracts an audience is inconclusive. Especially since a major portion of Conan Gray's audience are teens who most likely listen to his music to express emotion, making sense why he appeals to the audience a lot in his marketing techniques. Let me know what you think?!

Other than the case study, my group has begun planning for our music marketing project, where we will be pretending that the song, We are Young, is the first release to a singer/band we make up. Our job is to figure out the marketing and distribution techniques we will use to market the singer/band's brand. We will also make a music video that will further the brand identity.

We planned to make a boy band to match the fun/catchy, expressive song. We all fell under the same vibe and idea for the band: a group of 21-22 years old boys (who are close friends) from California who have decided to release their first song, aka We are Young. This Californian boy band will clearly lead us to a teenage audience. That eventually sparked the idea for BRING BACK 2016 as our marketing theme. Currently in today's world, "bring back [the vibes of] 2016" is trending. Thus, the band coming into light during this period of time with the "yolo", "teenage boy band", "beach guys" energy is PERFECT!

We are now working on outlining how we will spend time in and out of class to create a marketing & distribution plan, as well as the storyboard and music video. After we get that timeline figured out, we will be diving into the details of our super cool marketing campaign, all explained in a super cool presentation, and then we will make our super cool music video.

Stay tuned for that! 👀

Yours Truly,

Macie 💗
